A Proposal For Implementing A Notification System For Obsolete File Formats and Applications : Long Paper - iPRES 2025 - Wellington, New Zealand / Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Aotearoa
Abstract
This paper builds upon the previous paper “Monitoring File Format Obsolescence in repositories”. This first phase was focused on evaluating a method to analyze the life cycle of file formats and identify their developmental stages. The term "life cycle" refers to the popularity of a file format over time, illustrated through a graph that depicts its rise and/or decline throughout the years. This information is crucial for both Preservation Watch and Preservation Planning. The method of the first phase also explored the possibility of predicting a file format's life cycle. This was achieved by utilizing the observed life cycle. The dataset was divided into a training set and a test set, with the training set being compared to the observed life cycle. In this paper the method from the first phase will be extended with extra capabilities and a solution for monitoring the life cycle. The monitoring will include notifications when action needs to be taken. Additionally, we will investigate the relationship between the file format life cycle and the application life cycle.Details
